Mario Torre is an Italian-born independent music composer, musician, photographer currently based in Hamburg, Germany. He manages a dual career in technology and the arts, serving as a Software Engineering Manager at IBM while actively composing music and leading the media collective LadyBug.
Musical Career
Torre co-founded in the 1990s alongside his brother, bassist and singer Massimiliano Torre and drummer Marco Chirico, the alternative rock band Frine, active in the post grounge scene in Salerno, Italy. With Frine, they release a number of EPs later collected in the album “Naturale Apparente Casualità”, re-released in 2018 on Bandcamp and on streaming platforms under the band name Frine.
After a hiatus and moving in Germany, Torre worked as a ghost artist and some electronic and scoring productions for minor projects, when he finally released his first solo work in 2020, a daunting and piercing soundtrack of the COVID pandemic that reshaped our modern society.
As an independent musician and composer, Torre is highly regarded within progressive and alternative circles for his technical skill and emotional depth, often praised by collaborative artists and clients on platforms like SoundBetter as an “exceptional musician” whose arrangements are technically impressive, warm, and highly purposeful. His music features intricate song structures, shifting time signatures, and the raw energy of 1990s alternative rock and progressive music, often utilising spacious synthesizer textures, orchestration, and lingering instrumental passages that feel like a film soundtrack, but amidst the complex instrumentation, his tracks often strip down to acoustic arrangements and intimate, storytelling vocals, shifting between quiet, reflective acoustic moments and heavy, wall-of-sound progressive crescendos. Torre treats albums as cohesive books rather than collections of songs.

Stories of Our Time is an 11-track project that serves as a deeply atmospheric sonic commentary on modern global human struggles, mixing alternative rock, progressive, ambient, and singer-songwriter styles, and centring thematic narratives around global migration, displacement, and human experiences.
The album’s key element is an empathetic response to the socio-political realities of the 2020s with a primary focus on global migration and displacement and human vulnerability and resilience. The tracks explore what it means to be forced away from home and the physical and emotional borders that split families apart, and it highlights individual human faces amidst massive global issues, contrasting bureaucratic coldness with individual hope and survival, unfolding a narrative of displacement across its 11 tracks.
Musically, the record is highly cinematic and layered, in line with other cinematic productions typical of Torre’s unique musical approach, and is shifting across several distinct indie subgenres, similar to waves in the ocean: Progressive Rock, Alternative Indie, Ambient Music, and Singer-Songwriter. The arrangements layer acoustic melodies and warm, sprawling synthesizer pads over prominent, driving basslines and daunting vocals provided by Massimiliano Torre, with lyrical explorations of separation, transit, and arrival. The album transitions intentionally from quiet, intimate acoustic lulls to sweeping, grand instrumental arrangements and liquid guitars meant to sound as vast as the oceans it references.
Notable standouts include tracks like “Drifting Away” and “The Ocean Within,” which use heavy nautical and water-based themes as metaphors for the literal and emotional weight of displacement, or the intimate “Stay with Me,” the reflective “September,” and the poignant “Samia,” which pays tribute to Alan Kurdi and the Olympian Samia Yusuf Omar respectively. Each side of the project concludes with an ambient outro, leaving the listener with a sense of ongoing, unresolved human stories.
